Exploring and Connecting

A Master Practitioner Self Build Module with Lara Ewing
Friday 8th - Sunday 10th February 2008 £375 including VAT

"All around us, at every moment in our lives, reaching out and touching us, there is a world of excitement and fascination. Its riches are denied to none, for beauty and wonder lie at every stage of the life cycle, from childhood to old age, transforming poverty into wealth, squalor into magnificence, tedium into sport, fear into recognition, hatred and bigotry into understanding. Access to this world does not require any great feat of intellect, nor does it demand a lifetime dedicated to the quest. All that is needed is a mind and a soul, the soul being that which opens the mind, breathing life into it, making it infinitely curious.
Colin Turnbull, The Human Cycle

In the passage above, Turnbull describes the sense of life that drives exploration. Exploration, and explorers, bring an enhanced sense of life and wholeness into the contexts in which they explore, applying curiosity and wonder to carry them forward into new territory.

Leif Smith of the Explorers Foundation, who has devoted his life to mapping the patterns of explorers and explorations, describes explorers as those who manifest “a passionate interest in problems, and truthful, determined, persistent search for solutions.” He goes on to say, A characteristic of explorations, and of cultures rich with them, is freeorder, a balance among designed and spontaneous orders that supports the testing of theoretical and practical conjectures, the honest recognition of error, and the rapid emergence of new conjecture.”

In this workshop, we will explore the explorer through modeling the internal (mindset, assumptions, beliefs, strategies) and external (freeorder, appropriate boundaries, open systems) conditions supporting exploration. Starting with the works of previous mappers of this territory, we will discover together patterns and tools to support our own exploration and spread patterns that enhance life through the personal and professional contexts in which we operate. The journey will take us into the world of aesthetics, philosophy, landscape, architecture, literature, theater, and art, interaction among people in organizations, spirituality and our own minds, hearts and souls. We will find that there is a shared, “objective” sense of what is whole and alive, and that freeing ourselves for exploration involves paying close attention to that sense and allowing it to guide us. We will also learn to recognize and reduce barriers and obstacles to exploration in our own internal experience, interaction with others, organizations and perhaps, political systems (although this workshop will adamantly not advocate any single ideology). There will be suggested pre-reading, pre-thinking and pre-feeling.
