Structure of Experience Review
General Impressions I found this to be an amazing weekend in the company of an impressive and gifted trainer. The whole weekend was relaxed and enthralling. David began each day with a story and his recollections had an immediacy and a purpose which serve as illustrations that will remain in my memory. Personal Development: new NLP thoughts, ideas, connections It was fascinating to hear David say that all NLP change techniques are a bi-product of original modelling that was codified in the original group. The example was given of the change personal history technique that emerged from modelling someone who overcame difficult times in her life by changing her own history. Being an exemplar on the final day of the module gave me an incredible insight into my own beliefs and strategies. It's a privilege to be asked about our own experiences and how we make sense of the world and this was a powerful reminder to me about the ability we all have to model ourselves. The fundamental idea that people put their beliefs into actions through the process of personal strategies came to the fore in the weekend and finding out these personal strategies from my co-learners was a fascinating and privileged way of entering into someone's world. This connects with an NLP presupposition that came into focus for me during the module, that we all have the necessary resources within us. Understanding the modelling process I came to understand from this module that modelling is not a technique as such but a way of approaching experiences. It is an interaction, by modelling our exemplars we can make sense of their experience by living it through our own experiences. "Modelling is the process of creating useful maps of the structure of human experience." The simplicity of David's approach to modelling was something that I found to be refreshing and inspiring. For example, he advised choosing an exemplar who manifests the ability that we want in the way that we want to do that ability or have that particular experience. Such a common sense and yet effective approach. This idiosyncratic model he contrasted to the generic model that would be offered in a group situation.
