You And Change

If you are involved in enabling change, (and I wonder who in NLP isn’t) then this might be an interesting and revealing stock take of your own responses to change. Do you practice what you preach or are you merely a conveyor of information?

Much will depend on your natural meta programmes which operate in the your different contexts. I invite you to seek out the framework devised by Shelle Rose Charvet, so that you can gain a clearer idea of your own internal structure which drives your response to change.

Current Changes

List up to 5 significant and 5 insignificant changes you have made/been involved in, in the past 12 months.

  • How many have you identified?
  • How many are still happening?
  • What are /have been your levels of stress for each of them?
  • How ready were you for each of them?
  • What was your level of contribution?

Successful Risks

List at least three successful ‘risks’ you have taken in the past 12 months. For each, identify:

  • What was the context?
  • What were the consequences of staying the same?
  • What were the known outcomes?
  • Was the risk self or externally imposed?
  • What did you believe at the time?
  • What approach did you take?
  • What was the end result for yourself and for others?

Risks Waiting in the Wings

Identify 5 risks you know you have been holding in the pending tray. For each of them, ask yourself:

  • What is stopping me?
  • What am I gaining from staying the same?
  • What don’t I know yet?
  • What will have to happen for me to move on this?
  • What can I do now?

Overall

Look back over the past 25 years and take work, home and play contexts. Plot against time, your change cycles. The cycle will take the form of:
change -> consolidation -> integration -> dormancy -> change.

Happy self modelling!
