Whatever ....
This is a little exercise derived from Bill O’Hanlon’s workshop – Solution Oriented Hypnosis. It is in the form of gentle self talk, when confronted with the brick wall – most often self imposed! Think of it as a mental laxative!
First of all, you have to be stuck and have reached an impasse. This may be accompanied with unsupportive thoughts, as they say in the trade. This situation may involve just you personally, or a group that you are part of, at work, home or socially. There is a clear ecological desire to move on, but.
- Check the ecology of the desire. Fix your goal.
- As you think of what you want, start noticing the objections that are coming forward. Come up with at least three. For example:
- I don’t know if I can cope.
- In the moment, other things are more important.
- I’m not sure it is me.
- Sit comfortably, and begin to talk to yourself like this:
- And I might not know if I can cope, and I might know, and I may not know now, and I may know now. Whatever, this is a goal that’s good.
- Other things might be more important, and this might be more important, and it may be more important tomorrow, or today. Whatever this is a goal that’s good.
- And I might not know if it is me, and I may know it is me, and others may not know and they may that it is me. Whatever, this is a goal that’s good.
- Take a moment know to notice what has shifted, what new thoughts you are having, and what might now be possible.
- If there are any further objections, then go through 3 once more.
And you may act upon this now, or you may leave it for a time, or you may do something else. Whatever, this is a goal that’s good.
