Gaining Understanding
June Exercise of the Month
Developed by Fran Burgess January 2005
|
This is an exercise based on the Understanding Model, created by Fran Burgess 2005.
PREPARATION
- Identify a person, scenario, issue that is currently confusing you, and with which you have little or no understanding.
- On a Scale of 1 low – 10 high, what is your current level of understanding?
- What do you want to achieve as a result of having gained understanding?
- Is this outcome ecological?
PROCESS
- Now imagine a mixer board in front of you, with THREE either sliders or dials, each with their own marked scales.
- Label them LOVE/DEEP APPRECIATION, CURIOSITY and CERTAINTY.
- Now adjust each slider/dial to their current levels as you consider your pursuit of understanding.
- Taking LOVE/DEEP APPRECIATION, consider how much more/less would be useful. Become aware of the uniqueness of this situation and yourself in it. Be aware of how essential this is. Be open to aspects of value you may not have noticed before. If you have been fighting the situation, relax into it. Adjust your slider accordingly.
- Taking CURIOSITY, consider just how much or little you are questioning about this situation. Notice if you have become complacent or disinterested. Up your levels of fascination and questing if needs be to make a difference. Or else you may find that your volume of curiosity is out of balance and needs reducing.
- Taking CERTAINTY, evaluate what you consider to be the truths that you hold within and through this situation. What values are givens for you? What aspects can you count on, that can counterbalance any doubt? And strengthen your Certainty, or if it is blocking ease off the slider.
- Fine tune each of these knobs until you gain a sense of balance and the system quietens.
FINISH
- On a Scale of 1 low – 10 high, what is your final level of understanding? If there has been little shift, go back and make further adjustments.
- Returning to your stated Outcome, what do you now need to do, and then what else?
- What do you now understand differently? What do you now understand about understanding?
