Lessons For Learning From Skiing
Always be positive about your learning. Don’t fear falling or failing – see a fall as an opportunity to learn. Focus on where you want to go – work in small stages – the next part of the slope or the next part of your learning. See the challenge in small, achievable chunks. Watch and copy others who are further on than you. Visualise yourself in their shoes. Copy what they do, how they act and their approach to learning and to disappointments. Accept their help with gratitude. Learn from others who are not as far on as you. Watch those who are struggling. What is holding them back? What can you learn from them? How can you help them? By helping them you will learn even more than they do. Learning is not a race. Don’t worry if others seem to be progressing faster than you. As long as you are improving, that’s enough. Sometimes you will even seem to go backwards. Think about why this might be. What can you learn about yourself and your learning from this? Spend time getting the basics right. Keep practising the simple stuff. It might seem boring at the time but it means you will get to the exciting stuff quicker in the long run. When you lack confidence “refresh it” with a “breeze” down the gentle slopes. With practice the difficult becomes easy. Relax and enjoy it for a while. And then move on to the next challenge. Lean into the slope. Push in the direction that you want to go. Work as a team. Support others when things are going well for you – you will benefit from their support later on! Don’t belittle the attempts of other learners however basic they might be – you were a beginner once and others helped you. Remember how it feels when you are praised. Take praise positively – accept it as it was meant. Don’t dismiss it. Keep praising and encouraging others in turn. Every now and then reflect on your progress. Look back at the beginners’ slopes and recognise your progress. Be proud of your achievements. Award yourself a medal or a reward. Confidence is everything. You are in charge of your mind. Work on visualising being successful. See yourself as a fantastic learner and you will become one. John Rising 04/04 – 02/05 – 02/06
