Metaphors in Mind
James Lawley and Penny Tompkins Target audience: Those working in change work Summary of content: An introduction and exploration of working with metaphor -symbolic modelling-to achieve change based on David Groves work. The exposition of a five stage therapeutic model and a useful explanation of how change occurs in the metaphor landscape. Recommended features: A clear, easy to follow model of clean language and its application through author voice and client transcript Personal impressions: I had been meaning to read this book for a long time and re-discovered through it the wonderful effectiveness of clean language and working with metaphor; of course, as I was the exemplar for James and Penny's workshop, I also re-accessed some lovely states and useful learning. I could not read this in big chunks however, and it took some time to assimilate. As a big chunker…wow!! However, because the clean language patterns are very clearly laid out, I think that it would meet the needs of small chunkers too.
