String Theory
Alan Burton NLP Summer Intensive 2004
|
To start with they showed us a trick with some string
And though I tried again and again with the thing
"I'll never do that!" said a familiar voice
It said "You could give up, it's your choice"
But I had to do it, this was no might or a should
Or maybe some day in the future I could
"You've paid for the course and taken time out!"
Said another anxious voice from inside with a shout
Concentrate, concentrate, it must be done
"You can't fail now it's only day one!"
It had to be now with my eyes open wide
So I pushed the old voice in my head to one side
And thought about something that I could do
As I struggled like a child tying up his first shoe
My feet started moving in time to this chore
Unconsciously moving to and fro on the floor
Then one time it happened but I didn't know why
Cos the next time I failed with a shrug and a sigh
'That's not a fail' said the new learning inside
It's just feedback about the way that you tried
You got it just so far, so just try again
Trigger operate test replay in your brain
So I did this, though, I can't say it was fun
To discover many ways that it could not be done
But as I felt each way that did not complete
I changed something to make the next go unique
This went on all night cos it took time to reveal
To drop with the eyes and go with the feel
Or to drop with the V and go with the K
As most of my new friends would probably say
Then I got it twice in a row and then four
And I could do it perfect many times more
And I must have missed it cos I just did not see
How the string trick suddenly completed for me
How did I do that? Why not try it once more
And the voice in my head changed from before
It said weakly "If only you hadn't listened to me,
You'd probably have got it a lot more quickly"
I thought 'This inner voice with it's intervention'
Must have some positive outcome intention
And, do you know what it was after all these years?
It was trying to save me from some of my fears
Of looking a fool and feeling like I'm no good
And not fitting in where I feel that I should
But I have been held back, it's been the wrong way
It's hard to win and have fun if you don't even play
So now I have choices and I do now choose
To laugh when I win and learn when I lose
So I thanked it for caring and teaching me
To be able to respond is responsibility
And the new voice I'll use from this time on
Will trigger, operate, test and exit when done
And voices that say never, can't and must
Have now gone to Meta where they can now rust
