The Explorer Knows
No one is broken, and no one needs fixing. I have just spent time with a new Explorer, and again I am awed at the resilience, the ingenuity and the self determination that is within even the most frightened and despairing. She has been in therapy for a year, and was also going through Inner Child work. Within about 10 minutes of meeting, we touched on internal voices. This brought about a strong reaction. It turns out that she had been warring with this Bad part of her for what seemed like eternity. This part, who was really angry, was the cause of so much of her misery and she spent most of her time trying to suppress it, with limited success. A week previously she was once more contemplating suicide. For those of you who are familiar with parts work, I offered that this was a sign of this part's commitment to her and unsurprisingly she discovered that this part was serving her by protecting her. I then asked if it was male or female and how old she was (it was female). All of a sudden instead of this imagined wicked witch, we have a little 8 yr old who was spending all her time fighting instead of playing and just being. Just by praising this part for all it had been doing, and recognising how hard it must have been for her, and discovering that there was no other parts around supporting her, this little girl could at last be heard. Establishing rapport at a deep level with this part enabled a whole new story to emerge - all of it self originated, with its own natural sense of order and rightness. A very different person left at the end of the session. "In all the therapy and Inner Child work little X refused to come out. I can't believe this has happened so quickly." Fran Burgess January 2004
