Final Thoughts on the Autumn 2003 Practitioner Programme
Once more we have come to the end of a Practitioner programme. And once more I am profoundly touched and humbled by the evidence of the human spirit writ large. For those of you who don't know, our last day is one of celebration, when every learner makes a presentation of what they've learnt about themselves as a learner and about learning, as a result of their learning project and their experiences on the programme. For those of you who are learners from this school, you will vividly recall your own presentation and being part of experiencing those of your fellow learners. It is a powerful experience. Tears, openness, courage, simplicity, humility, pride, joy, fear, panic, laughter, love is the enduring hallmark. Each time it is the same wonderful unfolding. Yet every time, the learners have little idea of what the morning will bring. They know the enormous discoveries and insights they have made themselves, and everyone is aware of their own milestones and the significant changes that have been occurring and are continuing to happen. They may well have shared some of these happenings with each other, since certainly many of the changes are because of their experiences with each other during the programme. However, as each person presents their journey, as a story, a poem, a picture, metaphors, anecdotes, a conversation, with props, without props, something magical keeps happening. We are privileged to be privy to what is deeply important for that person. Deep learning does that. Learning about ourselves as learners, finding ways to describe our experiences in the unknown can only be a revelation. And in that revealing, we connect with each other at a level and in a way that would astonish even the most hardened cynic. We connect with the essential Purpose of that person. And as we are touched we reconnect to our own Purpose. As the 'trainers' Derek and I are left in awe of the limitless potential on offer within every one of our learners. We are just proud that we have been able to put together an environment and range of experiences that enables people to unfold and flourish. We must be doing something right. And thank God and our teachers for it. And in the meantime, this wave of learners go back into their worlds, creating differences because they are different, and bringing into the lives of others the something different, enhancing and enriching. What a good world to belong to, as we prepare for the start of the next course. Fran Burgess January 2004
