Our diving

Poolside The Scuba Diving element is not compulsory - though you will be amazed to find yourself wanting to do it even though you would have put money on it that you wouldn't!

It is positioned in the programme on the 8th day, after we have spent the previous seven days exploring and practising at least fifteen different ways of managing state. So the experience is an opportunity to test out the learning for real – learning at emotional, mental and possibly spiritual as well as physical.

For many this is the equivalent of walking on hot coals - and equally exhilarating!

Going out of your depth

  • I was really pleased with the way I managed my state during the scuba diving when I was feeling very off balance and scared, so that I ended up enjoying the experience I didn't want to stop. Trish - Accountant

  • I overcame my previous doubts with ease and achieved more by taking my mask off at the deepest part of the pool with no-one around! Helen - HR Manager (Ed: actually Helen thought no-one was looking, however...!)

  • The scuba diving was an achievement. It is something I have always wanted to do. To me it was my reward for coming on the course! I admired the way everything was arranged with care and safety. Jackie - Healer.

  • Scuba diving is something that I would never have thought of doing - I'm uncomfortable around water. The sense of achievement was just wonderful - I feel now I can do anything - I met the challenge of my fears. And apparently I was the inspiration for someone else as well! Sue - Administrator

  • The scuba diving for me was a very big obstacle. I worked on changing state and I actually felt so relaxed at one point under water as I do In yoga!! I need to remind myself that I did this and it was a big hurdle - so other things can be done as well. Jennifer - Administrator

  • I'm pleased I had a go at scuba-diving. I found it exhilarating and felt extremely proud of myself! Elaine - Manager

  • I was feeling really anxious. I told myself and family if I just went underwater that would be enough and I visualised this.... I drew upon my spiritual mentor .... When I managed to do what was asked of me I stood up, my inner voice saying "Ok you've done what you set out to do. You can get out now." Then I was given someone 1:1 and I listened carefully, concentrated on my breathing, taking deep slow breaths. I managed to do two lengths even in the deep end and FELT GREAT!! I'm so glad I didn't get out. I'm asking myself if it would have been different is I had visualised myself swimming underwater confidently and not just focused on the first part?! Judith - Planning Assistant

  • And scuba diving - what can I say? As Fran said 'a great reference experience.' What a stage to do it too- we have acquired knowledge of state management skills. I enjoyed learning how my breathing affected my state and affected risk levels. Physical proof that a deep breath can 'get you high'! Janet - Lifelong Learning Co-ordinator

  • The scuba diving turned out to be a real unexpected challenge for me. ... During the first 5 minutes I really really wanted to quit ... I used the distraction technique to calm my panic and stuck with it until I reached a place where I could carry on. I was very proud of myself for being able to manage that. June - Midwife

  • The scuba proved a real milestone for me .. it was something that I would not normally take part in and so I felt a real sense of achievement afterwards ... it was great having the support of the team. Lesley - IT Trainer

  • Sitting on the bottom of a swimming pool and feeling calm ... making the connection between my self talk and breathing Susan - Brand Director

  • great experience! 1- I would never have taken this on previously. 2- I found it difficult, particularly the breathing but persisted and 3- I'd like to do some more. Linda - Life Coach

  • One of the most significant moments was the scuba diving ... I am a comfortable swimmer ...I was surprised how difficult the act of breathing underwater proved to be ...I learned how choosing an appropriate state could help me avoid panic and defeat. I learned a lot about the way I learn that can be generalised to other learning. Pat - Writer

  • I woke up at 5.30am yesterday a wimp and a day later, guess what I'm still high! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR GIVING ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO PROVE TO MYSELF I AM NOT A WIMP AFTER ALL!! Dot – Therapist and non swimmer

  • I wasn’t worried about the Scuba Diving until Derek started explaining the equipment. PANIC -> FEAR -> I DON’T WANT TO DO THIS BLOODY STUPID SCUBA DIVING ANYWAY!! (familiar pattern) – but getting through that fear by keeping going and not giving up lead to the MOST BRILLIANT, EXHILARATING experience. Fear of instructions + details + confusion – no longer stops me working through the panic, because I’ve seen what can be on the other side. Eileen – Teacher

  • I’m very pleased at how quickly I feel I picked it up, despite some anxieties prior to the day and even whilst in the pool. I’m pleased at how I stayed focussed and resourced. This NLP stuff works! Neil – Occupational Psychologist

  • Scuba Diving was a turning point for me. I was not a swimmer, didn’t like water and hated to be out of my depth literally and figuratively. Through doing the scuba diving I learnt the fundamental importance of breathing through panic. I was aware of the different Parts and was able to calm them down. By the end of the hour I was having a whale of a time. I actually went diving on holiday and learning to swim properly became my learning project. Keith – Accounts Manager

  • The scuba diving was scary for me! When the tanks were strapped to my back and I started wading into deeper water, I became a bit panicky and claustrophobic. Yet I called on my “Threshold Mentors” and heard the information I needed and I was fine. I did it and enjoyed it! A great sense of achievement knowing I CAN DO IT! Ness - Mother

  • The thought of being without makeup, hair wet and in a bathing costume at my age, amongst people I barely knew, convinced me that I wouldn’t do it. However I realised that emotional learning was as important as physical learning and realised that self consciousness and embarrassment are just states that can be changed. I astounded myself by how much I enjoyed myself and feel really proud that I gave myself this opportunity. PS I wore leggings and a big T shirt! Mary – Teacher

  • When I began to panic at one point since I kept rolling over, I heard myself say “Act as if I’m Derek (our instructor)” and soon I was swimming around to the manor born. Pauline – Recruitment Consultant

  • I am a good swimmer and was looking forward to the scuba diving. When we were ready to go towards the deep end, I found it much more difficult that I imagined. I found myself getting into a state with the usual internal voice telling me I was stupid. Then I realised I was holding my breath and experiencing my NO internal congruence signal. I changed state, I spoke to myself with love and I started breathing. I can’t say that I immediately mastered the exercise, but I did it in the end, and I could do it again. Amelia – Trainer
